Urticaria - Symptom, Causes, Home Remedies for Urticaria

What is Urticaria ?

Urticaria or nettle-rash is a disorder of the skin. It is characterised by an eruption resembling the effect produced by the sting of a nettle.

Causes & Symptoms of Urticaria

Raised red and white patches occur in parts or over the whole surface of the body, and are accompanied by great itching and irritation.

Modem medicine believes allergy to be the causative factor of urticaria, but the real reason is the aggravation of kapha and vayu in conjunction with the vitiation of pitta. Sudden exposure to cold when the body is hot, as after exercise; infestation with parasites; and mental excitement are so-me of the causative factors.

Medicines & Prescriptions for Urticaria

An Ayurvedic preparation, Haridra Klzanda, may be given in one teaspO)}nful doses thrice daily with lukewarm water. Another popular remedy is red ochre (gqirika) or geru. Kamadugdha Rasa, which contains appreciable amounts of this substance, is given in five grain doses four times a. day. Alternatively, Suta Shekhara Rasa and Arogyavardhini Rasa may be given in five grain doses thrice daily with honey. In case of constipation attending the complaint, a mild laxative may be given.

In case the patient suffers from intestinal worms, that condition should be treated first. If neglected, urticaria is likely to recur

Home Remedies for Treating Urticaria

Haridra (Curcuma longa) or haldi, used in all Indian dishes, has long been recognised as the best remedy for urticaria. Regular use of it can prevent attacks of urticaria. A paste made of haridra, ground with a little water, may be given to the patient in two teaspoonful doses thrice a day. If the patient finds it unpalatable, it may be mixed with milk and sugar. The affected parts should be rubbed with mustard oil with which powdered rock salt has been mixed. The body should then be exposed to the sun and rubbed with a piece of copper.

Diet and Other Regimen: A salt-free diet is recommended. Sour substances like curds should be avoided. All bitter substances and vegetables like drumsticks and bitter gourd are helpful. Onions and garlic should be taken in adequate quantities.

A food diary should be maintained indicating the relationship between a particular food and the appearance of symptoms.
