Greying of Hair - Symptom, Causes, Home Remedies for Greying of Hair

What is Greying of Hair ?

Hair springs from the true skin, each hair having a root and a stem or shaft. The stem is generally rounded and varies greatly in thickness, while in the case of a curly hair, it is oval or tlattened in section. The varying tint of the hair is due to pigment scattered in varying amounts throughout the hair. The rate of growth of hair is about 15 centimetres or 6 inches in a year, though in most persons, when the hair reaches a certain length, it ceases to grow at the root and is gradually pushed upwards till it falls out. It is then replaced by a new hair which develops from a fresh papilla.

Causes & Symptoms of Greying of Hair

An important part is played by the sebaceous glands which open into the follicles of the hair. Dryness of the hair in some persons is the result of malfunctioning of the sebaceous glands.

Hair has a tendency to lose its natural tint with age. A white hair is produced by the formation of numerous air spaces throughout the cells composing it. Greying of the hair in old age is natural but premature greying of the hair is a morbid condition. The causative factors ioclude certain diseases like chronic colds, sinusitis, and a constitution given to excessive passion and worry. Persons who are given to washing their hair with hot water are more prone to suffer from premature greying of hair than others.
