Lemon Balm

Any garden containing Lemon Balm will never be short of bees: the nectar in the flowers helps to produce excellent honey. On the other hand, you will never be short of Lemon Balm plants either. The plant seeds, itself freely and, unless checked, will appear in all parts of the garden. Lemon Balm is a perennial herb and will grow to about one mettre high. When crushed, the leaves have a very distinct lemon aroma and this makes the plant ideal for growing near a patio or terrace.

Originally found in the Middle East, Lemon Balm is now grown in all moderate climates and is a particular favourite in Greece. The Greek name for this herb is Melissa, meaning honey bee, and the popular Continental tea made from Lemon Balm leaves is widely known as Melissa tea.
