Elder

Elder hedgerow shrub, or small tree, is particularly valuable. Every part of it - leaves, flowers, berries and bark - have some culinary or medicinal use. The bright-green leaves and creamy, scented flowers are followed by clusters of purple berries, and it is worth growing in any garden for its looks alone. There is also a golden-leaved species (S. nigra aurea), which makes an effective garden tree.
