Comfrey

This member of the borage family has two main types, the Common or Blue Comfrey and the Russian Comfrey. Its ancient name was Knitbone, since the plant has a special effect on the bones and ligaments. Comfrey is a large, handsome plant but needs plenty of room in the herb garden; it tends to increase rapidly and swamp smaller plants.

The Common or Blue Comfrey has deep blue drooping flowers and compact growth. Russian Comfrey will grow to over one metre high and has thick branching stems and rather hairy grey-green leaves. The flowers are a deeper, almost purple-blue, and droop in clusters at the end of the stems. Both plants will tolerate most soils, providing they are not too dry in summer.
