Chives

Chives are the smallest plants of the onion family but their history goes back to 3000 B.C.,when chives were grown and used in ancient China, and then throughout the Mediterranean area. Subsequently, chiveswere established in Britain by the Romans. One of the most useful culinary herbs, chives add a subtle onion flavour to fdad. and can be tolerated even by those who jdislike onions. They are also easy to grow and by sowing seed in succession you can have a supply all the year round. Their mild flavour combines wen with any savoury dish.

Only the bright-green, grass-like leaves are used in cooking, and when needed these should be cut about 5 cms from the ground, to encourage new growth.
