What is Meningitis ?
Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes of the brain. It may occur independently, or may be the result of such diseases as tuberculosis. In either case, the brain and, sometimes, the spinal coverings are involved.
Causes Symptoms of Meningitis
Except in the case of pneumococcal or tuberculous meningitis, the onset of meningitis is sudden, the temperature rising from 39° to 41.1°C. Vomiting, headache, and shivering appear first, followed by stiffness of the neck. Convulsions are common among children. The patient may fall down suddenly and go into convulsions, or he may go to bed and be found unconscious the following morning.
The meningitis patient suffers from irritability, insomnia, and even delirium. His body is tender to touch. The limbs are so stiff that the pressing of the lower limbs on the abdomen with the knees straight becomes impossible. Sometimes red spots appear on the patient's skin. This condition is called 'spotted fever'. If unchecked, cardiac failure may occur within a week, resulting in death. Meningitis or cerebro-spinal fever may last from two to four days, or stretch cj?ver some months.If the patient survives the first week, c~hances of recovery are favourable.
In addition to the above medicines" Mahavishagarbha Taila should be used for massaging the baoJc, particularly the spinal region. Diuretics (medicines increasing the flow of urine)should be taken to help the patient to reIie/'ve cerebral oedema, if present.

When the patient is conscious, a liquid diet may be given orally, cart: bemg taken that there is no aspiration of food into the lungs.
During the disease, if weakness, If any part of the body develops, physiotherapy is called for.
